The First Lady and the Minister of Secom, Paulo Pimenta, participated in relief actions for victims of the Rio Grande do Sul flood. In an interview, Marina says that her objective ‘is not to appear’
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, was overshadowed by other figures in the Lula (PT) government during the crisis caused by severe flooding in Rio Grande do Sul in recent days. At least that’s what data from Google Trends suggests, a search engine tool that allows you to compare how many times a certain term was searched by internet users.
In the last ten days, since the crisis deepened, Brazilians have searched almost five times more for the term “Janja”, the first lady’s nickname, on Google than for “Marina Silva”, although the former senator’s folder has a fundamental role to play in tackling the effects of the climate emergency.
Even the name of minister Paulo Pimenta, from the Presidency’s Communication Secretariat (Secom) was searched more on Google than Marina Silva’s. Pimenta, who is from Rio Grande do Sul, was personally involved in responding to the tragedy that struck the State. On average, the term “Janja” registered 39 points, compared to 12 for “Paulo Pimenta” and 8 for “Marina Silva”.
Marina Silva’s “recall” is only greater than that of the Minister of Regional Integration and Development, Waldez Góes (PDT). Former governor of Amapá, the pedetista registers less than 1 point in comparison with the other three names in the Google tool. Along with Marina Silva, his portfolio has several responsibilities in the crisis affecting Rio Grande do Sul.
In an interview with the newspaper The globe This Sunday, Marina Silva said that the objective of her participation in the government “is not to appear”. “In the first year, reducing deforestation by 50%, isn’t that a delivery? Of the 80 programs in the Multi-Year Plan, 54 have sustainability actions. We have an action that makes the low-carbon agriculture program, which represented 0.8%, now included throughout the Safra Plan. These are deliveries. The goal is not to appear. If you want to appear, you don’t need to be a minister,” she said.
In the midst of the crisis in Rio Grande do Sul, Marina Silva’s ministerial portfolio is the target of a new attack by Centrão in Congress, and could lose part of the control of the National Fund on Climate Change, which has R$ 10.1 billion available for contributions to the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
The rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul began with greater intensity on April 27, in the Vale do Rio Pardo region, in the center of the state. But it was only on April 29 that the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued the first red alert for the rain situation. On May 2, the number of fatalities increased, with 19 new deaths recorded in just 24 hours. It is also on this day that the subject begins to skyrocket in Brazilian searches on Google.
The tool’s data also indicates that the peak of interest in the floods, until now, occurred on May 6th – that was when the number of searches for “Rio Grande do Sul” reached its peak on Google. The 6th, last Monday, was also marked by the highest level of Guaíba, the lake that borders Porto Alegre.
On the morning of that day, the body of water reached a level of 5.33 meters. Monday also saw the indefinite closure of Salgado Filho airport, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul – it had already been closed since Friday, the 3rd. Also according to Google Trends, the floods caused a spike in searches by Brazilians about the State in the last five years
The first lady captured the attention of social media at various times during the crisis. The first was on Saturday, the 4th, when opponents accused her of going to Rio de Janeiro to attend the singer Madonna’s concert, on Copacabana beach – in fact, the sociologist did not appear at the event.
On Sunday, the 5th, she was in Rio Grande do Sul. She visited the Metalworkers Union of Canoas, one of the cities most affected by the flood, and a local social project that was helping to rescue animals affected by the water.
Lula and several of his ministers were also in Rio Grande do Sul at that time, including Paulo Pimenta and Marina Silva.
Janja, who already has 1.2 million followers on the adoption of a rescued dog in Canoas.
The post about Caramelo alone, rescued from the roof of a house, had 74 thousand likes on X.
The mixed breed dog was named “Esperança”.
“Hope, Union and Reconstruction: this is what Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul need! Thank you very much to the 101 Viralatas Association and the Municipal Animal Welfare Department. Welcome, Hope! Your sisters Resistência and Paris already love you”, wrote Janja in the Instagram post.
