YoRayo Vallecano coach ñigo Pérez has faced criticism for not giving Colombian James Rodríguez many minutes, who joined the club this season after being released from Sao Paulo.
According to the criteria of
Between leaving the Brazilian club and joining the Spanish club, James had an extraordinary Copa América, in which he was key in leading the Colombian national team to the final, which they lost to Argentina. He contributed one goal and six assists.
However, he has not had any continuity at Rayo: he has barely appeared in two games, both coming off the bench and almost at the end. He had played 11 minutes in his debut against Osasuna and this Sunday, in the match against Atlético de Madrid, which ended 1-1, James was on the pitch for 17 minutes.
Íñigo Pérez’s explanation: why James doesn’t have more minutes
Perez said there is no formula to determine how long James can be on the court and defended his approach.
“With James there is no exact measurement of whether he plays ten minutes, twenty or whatever. I understand the external euphoria, I understand it but I have to evaluate everything. I accept the criticism of his few minutes but he comes from a six-week inactivity and now he is in the third week of work. This is not mathematical,” declared the DT.
“He has to adapt to the group and the group to him. When my players started competing, they had been in preseason for five weeks,” the coach added to explain his decision.
This week, Rayo Vallecano will have two matches. On Wednesday they will visit Girona, with Yaser Asprilla and Jhon Solís (12m from Colombia) and on Saturday they will play again at home against Leganés (9:15 in the morning).
