On the eve of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the independence of Brazil, which this year is of special tension and importance as it is being held just a few weeks before the presidential elections, President Jair Bolsonaro, who appears as the loser in all the polls against candidate Lula da Silva, has turned this national celebration into a great campaign act. All of Brazil is in suspense about the speech that he will give, because he knows that it will be the most important of his campaign, and to which he has summoned all his followers.
In his desperate search for votes, Bolsonaro has not only winked at the evangelicals, who in a large majority already vote for him, but has also attended a Catholic mass in Brasilia, the political heart of the country, with half of his cabinet. The mass, celebrated by the priest Jean Marcos in the parish of Sao Miguel Arcanjo, has generated special interest, since the priest allowed both President Bolsonaro and his Defense Minister, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, to speak. Bolsonaro began his sermon on his knees and then finished it standing up. In it he asked God: “With the strength of the Holy Cross, drive away all the enemy powers that threaten the Brazilian people.” And —while the faithful shouted “!myth! Myth! ”- He added: “Keep away from us the plague of communism”. Bolsonaro closed his sermon with his motto of “God, country, family and freedom.” The priest added: “Brazil is the enemy of communism, gender ideology and abortion.”
Minister Nogueira did not want to be left behind and, quoting the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, attacked the sins of sex: “Don’t fool yourselves: neither pedophiles, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor thieves, nor drunkards shall have any part in the Kingdom of God.”
Along with the President and the Minister of Defense, the Ministers of Economy, Paulo Guedes; Foreign Affairs, Carlos Franca; the Attorney General of the Union, Bruno Bianco; that of Health, Marcelo Quiroga; and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of the president.
The mass in Brasilia, for the celebration of which the heart of Emperor Dom Pedro I was brought – transported by the Portuguese Air Force in a jar of formalin – has had a special resonance in the media and in public opinion, since it has been an anticipation of tomorrow’s great political act. A large crowd of followers of the “myth” of the extreme right is expected, both in Brasilia and in Rio and Sao Paolo, who hide behind the darkest and most authoritarian aspects of religion to defend their ideas, while actions of violence given the heated climate of the most radical Bolsonarists, who see the possibility of re-election of their boss disappearing.
