President of El Salvador was re-elected on Sunday (4.Feb.2024); since taking office in government, he has been fighting crime
Re-elected president of El Salvador in Sunday's elections (Feb 4, 2024), Nayib Bukele said he had spoken “sometimes” with the head of the Executive of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). However, according to him, the PT member “Never” spoke about topics related to public security, Salvador’s main political banner.
Nayib Bukele talked with journalists on Sunday (Feb 4), including foreigners, when he was asked about how the country deals with the issue, since Brazil has “many problems” in the area. Bukele responded: “I spoke with President Lula a few times, but he never mentioned the issue of public security to me. I imagine he has his own way of approaching and dealing with the situation.”.
Watch the statement (from 32 minutes onwards, in Spanish):
The president of El Salvador said that his country “show it to the world” what “all problems have a solution when there is political will”. Bukele highlighted that the nation “resolved” the security crisis in a short time, even though it is a small country with few resources. According to him, what El Salvador does in the area of public security “probably” It is also necessary in Brazil.
Bukele was elected in 2019 and, since then, has been fighting crime in El Salvador, especially that committed by gangs. He decreed and extended the state of emergency several times. He even launched a mass incarceration operation. International organizations, such as Amnesty Internationalsay the practices used by their government violate “systemically” human rights.
“What bothers many governments is that El Salvador shows that everything can be done willingly”, said Bukele. “When a country does not solve its problems, especially crime, it is because there is no desire to solve them. And, in some cases, because they are partners of criminals”, he continued, adding that “attacking crime has many consequences”.
Bukele said he doubted that “the recipe from El Salvador“can be replicated”in any other” country, but that the government's example in the fight against crime can inspire other administrations around the world. According to him, the country is “small and poor” and yet, “is solving its problems with political will and support from the people”. He concluded: “And that is why this example applies in Brazil and in any country in the world”.
