President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted this Wednesday the report of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval), on the reducing working poverty in Mexico.
“Yesterday there were data from Coneval. Working poverty was reduced in Mexico as it had not happened in many years, since records have been recorded,” the president highlighted in his morning press conference at the National Palace.
It’s good news, right? Because it has to do with everyone and, above all, with the most needy people, who are our brothers, our peers, because their happiness is our happiness, if things go well for them, it does not go well for us.”
On Tuesday, Coneval presented information regarding working poverty for the first quarter of 2024.
He Labor Poverty Trend Index It is an indicator that monitors the evolution of labor income and its relationship with the cost of the food basket on a quarterly basis.
According to the report, between the first quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, the percentage of working poverty presented a decrease at the national level of 1.9 percentage points, going from 37.7 percent to 35.8 percent, respectively.
The organization stated that the level observed in the first quarter of 2024 is lower than that of working poverty reported prior to the COVID19 pandemic.
In addition, real per capita labor income had an annual increase of 7.2 percent, going from $3,058.60 to $3,277.58, between the first quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024.
The above was accompanied by an annual increase in the number of employed people of approximately 628.8 thousand people.
Coneval mentioned that, on an annual basis, between the first quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, working poverty remained at the same level in the rural area, that is, 49.6 percent, while in the urban area it decreased around 2.6 percentage points, going from 34.0 percent to 31.4 percent.
