The Canicula is a meteorological phenomenon characterized by a notable reduction in rains and a increase in temperatures. In 2024, this event will affect various regions of Mexico from the July 3 to August 11.
During this period, known to generate extreme heat conditions, it is expected temperatures that exceed the 37 degrees Celsiusmostly clear skies and warmer air.
This phenomenon, which originates a few weeks after solstice summer of June 21is an annual event caused, in part, by the trade winds that, blowing from the east, inhibit the formation of clouds over the ocean and, consequently, reduce precipitation in part of the Mexican territory.
The term “Canicula” comes from “canes” (dogs in Latin) and is astronomically associated with the constellation of Canis Major and its star Sirius, known as “The Burning One”. Historically, the appearance of Sirius on the horizon has coincided with this period of intense heat.
The states most affected by the dog days 2024 include:
Campeche
Colima
Chiapas
Warrior
Gentleman
Michoacan
Morelos
New Lion
Oaxaca

Quintana Roo
San Luis Potosi

– Carry out outdoor activities outside of peak solar radiation hours, between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon.
– Use umbrellas, caps or hats to protect yourself from the sun
