President Andrés Manuel López Obrador addressed this Monday the recent report presented by the DEA, which states that the Mexican cartels have penetrated all 50 states of the United States.
In his morning press conference at the National Palace, the president agreed with Mike Vigil, former head of operations of the DEAwho described the report as “a rehash”, pointing out that this situation is not new and that it has been known for years.
“I was watching the networks, and a reporter, a driver, asked him about the report that the DEA gave. This man was a DEA agent, and I believe he is still active, but retired (…) He says that for years he has You know, it’s not new, that it’s a rehash“, he expressed.
López Obrador defended his policy of “hugs not bullets” and acknowledged that he respects the opinion of Vigil, who believes that this strategy does not work.
However, the Tabasco native asked for patience and stressed that change in security matters takes time.
“Let him wait a little because that takes time and, furthermore, it is natural that he does not agree, because there are those who maintain, and I respect them, that force must be used, that the problem is going to be solved with coercive measures. “said the head of the Executive.
“And I think that evil cannot be faced with evil, evil must be faced by doing good and that peace is the fruit of justice.”
The President also stressed the importance of each country assuming its responsibility in the fight against drug trafficking.
“We are applying a strategy so that there are no deaths, homicides, murders in Mexicoand we help and cooperate with the United States government, but the priority, our duty is to guarantee peace and tranquility in Mexico,” he stressed.
“They have to do their homework.”
DEA: The Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels lead the drug market in the US
The DEA’s latest annual report has once again brought to light the preeminence of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in drug trafficking to the United States.
This revelation comes at a time of renewed tensions between the anti-narcotics agency and the Government of Mexico, especially following recent claims about bilateral cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
According to the report, these two cartels have managed to establish themselves as the main players in the illicit drug market in the United States, generating colossal profits thanks to the trafficking of fentanyl, a synthetic drug that has triggered a health crisis in the North American nation.
Its reach extends across more than 40 countries and covers all 50 states of the United States, with a criminal network that operates from production to distribution, with the complicity of corrupt officials, front companies and other accomplices.
The DEA maintains that both the Sinaloa Cartel and the CJNG have managed to virtually eliminate their competition in the US market, consolidating themselves as the only dominators in the illicit drug trade.
Their ability to control all stages of the process, from manufacturing to distribution, has allowed them to establish absolute control over this lucrative market, defying the efforts of authorities in both Mexico and the United States.
Regarding the internal structure of the Sinaloa Cartel, the DEA reveals that after the conviction of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in 2019, the organization has fragmented into four independent but collaborative factions, led by different figures, including Guzmán’s children. and other trusted associates.
This “umbrella” structure allows them to share resources and maintain a semblance of unity while operating autonomously in different regions and market sectors.
On the other hand, the CJNG operates under a franchise model, where different criminal groups can operate as independent cells under the cartel’s brand, following central guidelines but adapting to the needs and particularities of each territory.
This strategy has allowed them to expand rapidly and diversify their operations, although it has also generated internal tensions between the different franchises and power groups.
In response to the DEA accusations, the Government of Mexico has reiterated its commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and has denied the existence of a crisis in bilateral cooperation.
However, the DEA revelations raise serious doubts about the effectiveness of the measures implemented so far and the ability of the Mexican State to confront these powerful criminal organizations, whose control over drug trafficking to the United States seems to be far from being neutralized. .
