Italian Federico Carboni, a 44-year-old quadriplegic, died today and became the first patient to undergo medically assisted suicide in the country, thanks to a 2019 Constitutional Court ruling that allowed this practice.

The Luca Coscioni association, dedicated to defending the legalization of euthanasia, confirmed the death of this patient who until now, for privacy reasons, was known as “Mario”, a native of the town of Senigallia.
a legal battle
In February he became the first Italian to obtain the drug to die from the authorities, although he had to pay for it himself and the association launched a fundraiser to pay the almost 5,000 euros what it cost
After ten years paralyzed, and after two legal battles to demand euthanasia, he finally passed away this morning.

The medically assisted suicide procedure took place under the medical supervision of the anesthetist Mario Riccio and the patient was accompanied at all times by his family, friends and association activists, such as Marco Cappato.
his last words
I have done my best to try to live as well as possible and recover as much as possible from my disability, but I am already at the limit mentally and physically.
In his last words, released by the organization, Carboni acknowledged his regret for “saying goodbye to life” but acknowledged that he was already “at the mental and physical limit.”
“I do not deny that I regret saying goodbye to life, it would be false and a liar if I said otherwise because life is fantastic and we only have one. But unfortunately it has not been like that. I have done my best to try to live as well as possible and recover the maximum of my disability, but I’m already at the limit mentally and physically,” he said.
The patient explained that he did not have “a minimum autonomy”, he depends on everyone and that he felt like “a boat adrift in the ocean”.
“I am aware of my physical conditions and future prospects and, therefore, I am totally serene and calm about what I will do. With the Luca Coscioni Association we have defended ourselves by attacking and we have attacked by defending ourselves, we have established jurisprudence and a bit of history in our country. I feel proud and honored to be by your side. Now I am finally free to fly where I want,” he concluded.
His case is the consequence of a 2019 Constitutional Court ruling, which stipulated that certain forms of euthanasia are not punishable, ruling on the trial of Cappato, prosecuted for accompanying a quadriplegic, Fabiano Antoniani, to die in Switzerland and finally exonerated.
