The charging points for public use installed in Italy have exceeded 50,000 units. This is stated in the fifth edition of the study “Charging infrastructures for public use in Italy” presented recently by Motus-E, which notes the installation of 13,906 new charging points in the past year, of which 3,450 were installed only in the last quarter.
Italy is among the most virtuous countries in Europe
The volume of new installations thus breaks the record set in 2022 (with 10,748 new points installed), bringing the number of charging points in the area as of 31 December 2023 to 50,678 units, a value that places Italy among the most virtuous countries in the world. Europe. In percentage terms, the Italian charging network has expanded by 38% in the last year, with a substantial doubling of charging points compared to 2021 (+94.7%). Together with the number of charging stations, the incidence of higher power infrastructures also increases: 22% of the charging points installed in 2023 are of the fast and ultra-fast direct current type.
Lombardy in the lead
Looking at the distribution by macro areas, the recovery of installations continues in the South and on the Islands, where 23% of the total charging points present in the Peninsula are now concentrated, compared to 19% in Central and 58% in Northern Italy. Lombardy confirms itself as the first Region for charging points (9,395), ahead of Piedmont (5,169), Veneto (4,914), Lazio (4,659) and Emilia-Romagna (4,253). Highlighted is Campania, the second overall region for infrastructure growth in 2023, with 2,691 new charging points installed. During the year, only Lombardy did better (+4,853), while the progress of Piedmont (+2,519), Veneto (+2,492) and Lazio (+1,991) followed closely behind.
Rome on the podium
Among the cities, Rome is the one with the most charging points installed as of 31 December 2023 (3,588), second place for Milan (2,883) and third for Naples (2,652). The ranking changes, however, if we consider the number of charging points per km² of surface, with Naples on the top step of the podium (225 points per 100 km²), ahead of Milan (183 points per 100 km²) and Rome (67 points per 100 km²). Leaving urban centers we notice the surge in charging points on the motorway, which as of 31 December 2023 reached 932 – of which 61% with power exceeding 150 kW – compared to the 496 recorded at the end of 2022. At least one The every 3rd motorway service area is equipped with charging infrastructure. A very important step forward for motorists, albeit limited by the failure of almost all motorway concessionaires to publish the notices required by law for the installation of the charging stations. Thanks to the collaboration with RSE, the report also includes the update of the spatial analysis of geolocalized charging points, from which it emerges that, considering even the most remote and isolated areas of the country, in 86% of the national territory there is at least one charging point within a 10 km radius. A value which, as we get closer to urbanized areas and metropolitan cities, rises to over 2,000 charging points in the same radius.
Motus-E
“The work necessary to infrastructure the country is naturally not finished, but the path taken is the right one and also in 2024 we will see a constant improvement and expansion of the charging network serving citizens”, observes the general secretary of Motus-E, Francesco Naso, hoping that the commitment of the operators can be supported by a simplification and standardization of the authorization processes, which are still long and complex. Today, approximately 18% of the infrastructure already installed is in fact unusable by end users, either because it has not so far been possible to create the connection to the network by energy distributors, or due to other bureaucratic complexities. “Because of this”, Naso points out, “it is necessary that all interventions to simplify the procedures are fully implemented by local administrations and that there is closer cooperation between all the subjects involved”.
Italy beats everyone
Looking at a continental level, the study then compares Italy's numbers with those of other large European countries. With 23 charging points for public use for every 100 electric cars in circulation, the Italian infrastructure confirms itself ahead of that of France (14 points for every 100 electric cars in circulation), Germany (10 points for every 100 electric cars in circulation) and the United Kingdom (10 points for every 100 electric cars in circulation), maintaining the primacy even considering only fast direct current charging points: Italy (3.4 points for every 100 electric cars in circulation), France (2.1 points for every 100 electric cars in circulation), Germany (2 points for every 100 electric cars in circulation), United Kingdom (1.5 points for every 100 electric cars in circulation). Also regarding the number of charging points compared to the total length of the road network, Italy is ahead, with an average of 1 charging point every 5 km of roads, ahead of the United Kingdom (1 point every 6 km), Germany ( 1 point every 7 km) and France (1 point every 9 km).
