Mexico City.- Virtual president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum explained that the invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend her inauguration was like the one she generally extended to other leaders with whom Mexico has diplomatic relations.
In an interview, upon leaving her transition house and in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sheinbaum argued, in response to a direct question, that the invitation for October 1 in the case of Russia is not unusual.
–Doctor, about the invitation extended to Vladimir Putin to attend your inauguration?–, she was asked aboard her vehicle.
“Ah, no, well the next Secretary of Foreign Relations (Juan Ramón de la Fuente) invited all the countries with which Mexico has relations, with those it does not have, well, he was not invited,” he replied.
“It was a general invitation, a diplomatic note, as they call it.”
–And has there been a response yet?–, he was pressed.
“No, there is still no response, but it is a general invitation that was made to all countries where Mexico has relations, nothing in particular,” he reiterated.
In the afternoon, reports began to circulate that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to the ceremony.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs then reported that it had sent diplomatic notes to all countries with which Mexico maintains relations to participate in the inauguration.
This includes, he said, 208 foreign leaders and 34 heads of international organizations.
On another topic, Sheinbaum confirmed that she met with former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, with whom, she said, she had a very good conversation.
“We really talked about Latin America, about progressive governments, about what governments close to the people mean, and we also talked about the situation in Latin America, the projects she did, a great conversation,” he added.
