This particular tumor predominantly affects young adults. For half of those affected, survival does not exceed five years.
It is not uncommon for a symptom, even a common one, to turn into a very serious and worrying event. Sometimes, small “clues” about our health can unexpectedly become something dramatic like a tumor.
Emma Snape, 34 and a mother of two, thought she only had one common flu. Yet, her condition turned out to be much more serious. This February, the woman began to show what seemed like the symptoms of a common cold, only to later give way to a shocking situation.
His health status is rapidly worsenedwhich is why she was admitted to hospital. Doctors initially diagnosed her with severe pneumonia, but further tests revealed the truth. Emma was suffering from a rare type of cancer called epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE).
It is usually said that special situations involve “one in a million people”. In this case, we are not dealing with a figure of speech but with an unfortunate incidence on the global population. EHE, in fact, is an extremely rare tumor, with an incidence of one person in a millionwhich affects the cells lining blood vessels.
This tumor mainly affects young adults or middle-aged women. Half of those affected do not survive more than five years. For Emma, the diagnosis was nothing short of shocking: doctors found 20 nodules in her lungs and others in her omentum, the tissue that lines the stomach and intestines.
THE symptoms of EHE vary depending on the area targeted by the tumor. Among those reported as most common are a persistent cough, significant breathing difficulties, abdominal pain, and weight loss. In Emma’s case, it all started with a dry, incessant cough, followed by increasingly severe pain.
Her sister, Kym Snape, described the time before and after the diagnosis as the hardest of their lives. She told the DailyMail: “It’s devastating that there’s nothing I can do to help her. It’s like a part of me is sick with her.” A support team has now been set up donation campaign in support of the “EHE Rare Cancer Charity”, an organisation committed to funding specific research for a cure for this rare cancer.
