You may forget your keys, your wallet, your headphones or your jacket when you leave the house, but what practically no one forgets when they walk out the door is their mobile phone. And this device has almost become another extension of our body, accompanying us wherever we go, no matter where.
That is why we can do more and more things with our smartphone, in terms of the capabilities it has. Without going any further, our cell phone has become a payment method or in some jobs it functions as an identification card to pass the turnstiles, but the possibilities are many more.
And one of the most requested by users for a long time is being able to use our smartphone as a travel card on public transport. A request that does not seem very complicated due to the fact that if you can have the credit card on your mobile phone, it must be the same technology to have the transport pass.
Now, the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium has taken the long-awaited step, and has launched a new app called Virtual Transportation Cardwhich for the moment It is only available for Android devices with version 7.0 or higher.
This app is different from the Madrid Public Transport app, since in which we all know the most that could be done with the pass is to recharge it (which is not little), but with the new one we take the leap to being able digitally carry the public transport card in the Google Wallet.
As we said, it is still somewhat limited, which makes it one of its functions for now. You can only carry the 10 trip voucher on your mobile. To load and activate this card, there is a section in the Virtual Transport Card app called Bank Card, where you must complete the information with yours.
To then go to Balance and Recharge and enter Acquire Card and Ticket, where you can buy your 10 trip voucherwhich currently costs 6.10 euros. In recent months, throughout the testing phase, 19,400 users have used it and 588,500 trips have been made.
“We have transport that is always alive. This is the first step to fully integrate the transport card into the mobile throughout 2025, we are designing the transport of the future in all its mobilities and in all its options”, explained the president of the Community of Madrid Isabel Díaz Ayuso. This is, therefore, the first phase of the TTP virtualization process that Next year it will also be available for personal monthly subscription, facilitating its widespread use including iOS (iPhone) technology.
