Mexico City.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador yesterday rejected the Ukrainian government’s request for Mexico to detain Russian President Vladimir Putin if he decides to attend the inauguration of Morena member Claudia Sheinbaum.
“We cannot do that, it is not our job, we are against wars, we are in favour of peace and what we have proposed in the case of the war between Russia and Ukraine are agreements, that there be mediation,” he said.
“I even suggested that we should first call on Indian Prime Minister Modi, Pope Francis and the UN Secretary General to establish communication, stop the war and prevent people from continuing to suffer, both in Ukraine and in Russia.”
Yesterday, the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico expressed its hope that the Mexican authorities will capture the Russian president if he decides to set foot on Mexican soil.
In a statement, the diplomatic mission said that there is an arrest warrant against the Russian president for the kidnapping and forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia, issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), whose jurisdiction Mexico recognizes.
“We trust that the Mexican government will comply with the international arrest warrant by handing the aforementioned man over to the United Nations judicial body in The Hague,” he said.
Yesterday, at his morning press conference, López Obrador justified the invitation addressed to Putin, after reiterating that Mexico had summoned the leaders and heads of state of all the countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations.
“The president-elect has already explained that Mexico has relations with almost all countries in the world. Right now there are no relations with Ecuador, because they invaded our embassy, and there are no good relations with Peru either. But in general, relations with all governments are very good,” he said.
“What do you do? You invite everyone and then the governments decide whether they will attend or not. That’s right, that has to do with Mexico’s diplomatic policy.”
