The Argentine Gustavo Costas will stop being the coach of the Bolivian National Team in the next few hours, due to the poor start in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Sources close to the Bolivian Football Federation confirmed that the decision to leave Costas, former coach of Independiente Santa Fe, has been made and only contractual issues related to compensation and the way in which he would be paid that money remain to be resolved.
Costas took on a process in which he hoped to renew the roster of Bolivia, which has not qualified for a World Cup since the United States in 1994. However, the start of the campaign has been calamitous.
Bolivia had never lost the first four games of the tie: They lost twice in La Paz (0-3 against Argentina and 1-2 against Ecuador) and two other times as a visitor (5-1 against Brazil and 1-0 against Paraguay).
“We know that it was going to be difficult for us and well, we have to keep working and try to look for positive results,” commented the Argentine coach after the defeat against the Paraguayans on the fourth day of the qualifiers.
Bolivia is, along with Paraguay, the team that used the most players in the tie: 27 players stepped on the field in the four games the team has played.
Paraguay, the first team to change coaches
Costas will be the second coach to leave his position so far in the tie. His compatriot Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who coached Paraguay, had already left after the first two days.
Daniel Garnero, also an Argentine, took over to replace Barros Schelotto and has already achieved his first three points, precisely against Bolivia.
On the next double date, Bolivia will be home against Peru on November 16 in La Paz and on the 21st they will visit Uruguay in Montevideo.
