PRo-Palestinian activists ostentatiously rubbed their eyes at the Western reaction to Russia’s incursion into Ukraine. Sanctions against the aggressor, arms deliveries for those attacked and support for the violent resistance of the population. Wait a minute, some said – isn’t there a conflict in the Middle East in which one side also occupies land for ideological reasons and denies the other side’s right to exist? How about if you seduce there just as well? The well-known Israeli journalist Gideon Levy quickly calculated in the left-liberal Haaretz how quickly Israel’s occupation regime would collapse if the country were cut off from the SWIFT payment system, as has now happened with Russia.
But a characteristic of many comparisons is that they lag, sometimes more, sometimes less. Ultimately, however, considering that this war began with a Nazi comparison, it is not surprising that it is also mixed up with the Middle East conflict. Incidentally, this also works in the opposite direction: an article in the conservative “Jerusalem Post” explained why Russia actually has a lot more similarities with the Palestinian leadership in this conflict than with Israel.
