The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that in the early hours of Wednesday (25) they attacked Syrian Army positions in retaliation for rocket fire from the Arab country against Israeli territory.
“In response to Syrian rocket fire against Israel yesterday (24), IDF fighters attacked military infrastructure and mortar launchers belonging to the Syrian Army,” the IDF reported on its X account (formerly Twitter).
At least two projectiles were fired on Tuesday (24) from the province of Deraa, in southern Syria, towards Israel, which responded with artillery fire, in the third incident of this type since the start of the Gaza war. sources said.
“Two launches were identified from Syria in Israeli territory, which landed in open areas. The Israel Defense Forces responded with artillery fire against the sources of the launch,” the Israeli army said.
The NGO Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the launch was carried out from the Deraa region and attributed the action to “loyal fighters” to the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah.
Both Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed armed groups are present on Syrian territory and are allies of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, and Israel considers their continued presence in the neighboring country a threat to its security.
Attacks in Lebanon
The Shiite group Hezbollah announced this Tuesday (24) that it had suffered six new casualties, bringing to 35 the total number of members killed since clashes with Israeli forces began on the border with Lebanon, just over two weeks ago.
The political and armed movement confirmed the six deaths in a series of statements during the day.
In total, the Islamic militia has lost 35 of its members since the border conflict began.
The confrontation between Hezbollah and the Israeli Army began on October 8, shortly after the surprise attack by Hamas terrorists. Since then, the sides have been involved in intense attacks on the border between Lebanon and Israel, where there were also actions claimed by Palestinian factions present in the region.
Violence has increased over the days and, although the Lebanese terrorist group has not yet officially claimed any attack this Tuesday (24), the press present in the border regions reported exchanges of gunfire between the two sides during the afternoon.
To date, the actions have also killed at least eight Lebanese civilians and militia members from different factions. More than 19,000 people remain displaced within Lebanon, according to the International Organization for Migration. (With EFE agency)
