Israel, Prime Minister Yair Lapid is ready to support the Two States solution
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz makes it known that in its intervention today, 22 September, atAssembly general of the UNthe Israeli premier, Yair Lapidwill support the solution of Two states in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Two-State solution had been set aside by previous governments, led by Benjamin Netanyahu and Naftali Bennett.
The negative reactions of the main opposition Likud party, the interior minister and the minister of justice were immediate
The negative reaction of the Likud, the main opposition party, was not long in coming. “Lapid wants hand over parts of the Land of Israel to the enemy. For years Benyamin Netanyahu has managed to remove the Palestinian issue from the international agenda, and in less than a year Lapid has instead brought Abu Mazen back to the fore, “Likud said.
Even in the same government of transition led by Lapid (in the run-up to the parliamentary elections in November) critical voices have been raised. “Lapid only represents himself with this stance“, warned the interior minister Ayelet Shaked, a member of the national religious right. “A Palestinian state represents a danger to Israel”.
Even the minister of justice Gideon Saar (leader of a new centrist secular formation) said that “a terrorist state in Judea-Samaria (West Bank) threatens our security. Most of the Israeli people and their representatives will prevent it”.
The former prime minister was also taken by surprise and completely opposed to Lapid’s initiative Naftali Bennett: “There is no logic to revive the Palestinian state project. We are in 2022 and not in 1993 (year of the Oslo accords, ed). Even our friends don’t expect us to compromise on our safety and our future. ”
