In Tel Aviv, thousands of people took to the streets again last Saturday against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his plans to restructure the judiciary. Many demonstrators waved Israeli flags and carried placards with slogans such as “Protect Israeli democracy from Netanyahu” or “Threat to world peace”. According to media reports, protests took place in 20 cities.
Since the formation of the new government at the end of December, there have already been numerous demonstrations against Netanyahu, who, after a year and a half in the opposition, had taken over government business in Israel. He has allied himself with far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties and heads the far-right government in Israeli history.
MPs should be able to override the court
The coalition is planning not only the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law, but also a controversial judicial reform. According to this, Parliament could revoke decisions of the Supreme Court with a simple majority. Netanyahu is currently on trial on corruption charges, which he continues to deny.
