The Israeli military has canceled vacations for all combat troops over fears that Iran will launch an attack in response to the destruction of its consulate in Syria. The decision was made this Thursday after carrying out a risk assessment and taking note of the threats from Tehran. In fact, the Defense Forces have reinforced anti-aircraft batteries and called up hundreds of reservists, since they consider that the Ayatollah regime could launch a rocket attack from its own territory instead of using “intermediaries” such as related militias in Lebanon or Syria,
“The Defense Forces are at war and the issue of deployment is constantly reviewed as necessary,” said a Corps spokesperson. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant added that Israel “increases its preparation” because “we need to be prepared and ready for each scenario.” Although on other occasions Iran has threatened to unleash retaliation after suffering aggression, the Tel Aviv Government has taken very seriously this time the proclamations in favor of revenge that fill Tehran. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei himself called on Iranians on Wednesday to respond to Monday's attack and stated that “the defeat of the Zionist regime in Gaza will continue and will be close to decline and dissolution.”
Israel has not yet claimed responsibility for the precision attack carried out in Damascus, where a missile blew up one of the consular buildings of the Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria. The explosion killed at least eight people, including the top leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria. In addition to General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, his 'number two' and five other officers of the same Corps died, as well as a Hezbollah leader. The attack was carried out by two F-15 fighters.
Aside from Tehran, Hezbollah has also vowed to take revenge on Israel. In the fighting, mainly bombings, carried out since October, the Islamist militia claims that 267 of its combatants have been killed on the country's northern border. A former head of Iranian Military Intelligence has indicated on Channel 12 television that he would not “be surprised if Iran fired directly at Israel.”
The Ayatollah regime, according to Israeli strategists, oscillates between the desire to avoid an open war or to respond to the attack so as not to show weakness and prevent other future actions by Israel. Military Intelligence still does not know which path it will take. In any case, Tel Aviv has reinforced the security of its embassies and other Jewish facilities abroad in the event that Tehran adopts a third way: not directly attacking the territory of Israel, but yes to their interests or their personnel abroad.
The United States is closely watching possible Iranian moves. At the moment, Washington has not detected that the regime is organizing any attacks on US troops in Syria or Iraq. In February, Iran stopped the blows it had been dealing to these bases since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza after three soldiers died in Jordan and the Pentagon responded with dozens of attacks against the Revolutionary Guard and militias linked to the Ayatollah regime.
