The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) killed a member of the Palestinian Hamas movement in Syria who was responsible for launching rockets towards the Jewish state. The military press service reported this on January 8.
“The IDF eliminated Hamas terrorist Hassan Akash, one of the main organizers of rocket attacks on Israel from Syrian territory in recent weeks, near the village of Beit Jin in Syria,” the department said.
Prior to this, on January 2, the IDF carried out retaliatory strikes on an area in Syria, from where five projectiles were launched towards Israel, which fell in an uninhabited area of the country. The military noted that the strikes were carried out in places where the fire was coming from.
Earlier, on December 31, it was reported that Israeli F-16 fighter jets attacked Syrian territory, sending cruise missiles towards the city of Aleppo. Prior to this, on December 18, IDF artillery carried out retaliatory strikes on an area in Syria from which shells were launched towards Israel.
At the same time, the deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties (CPVS) in Syria, Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, said that the day before the IDF carried out six strikes on Syrian targets in the vicinity of Damascus.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry, commenting on the Israeli air strikes, said that Tel Aviv should not escape punishment for its actions. According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, Israel continues its aggressive policy because the world community “turns a blind eye to it.”
The situation in the Middle East escalated on October 7, when Hamas subjected Israel to massive rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, and also invaded border areas in the south of the country and took hostages. On the same day, the Israeli side began to launch retaliatory strikes.
Palestinians are seeking to return the borders between the two countries to the lines that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War. Palestine wants to create its own state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and make East Jerusalem its capital. Israel refuses these conditions.
