The world amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament has ended with a very positive balance for Spain, with a total of six medals. Oliver Buendía and Dea Celma took the bronze. In the finals it could not be for Stella Ábalos, David Hervías and Mercedes Custodio, who took the silver. However, Isabel Calvo put the icing on the cake by winning in the final by unanimous decision and bring gold to Spain.
The afternoon of fights began with the atomweight (47.6 kilos) fight between Stella Ábalos and the Ukrainian Anna Hyria. After a first round in which the Spaniard was superior, her rival was able to capitalize in the second round. In a quick movement the Ukrainian took over La Jefa’s leg and he subjected her. Despite the defeat, Stella improves her record from the last World Cup and gains experience that will be very useful for her in the future.
In the next fight came the milestone. Isabel Calvo beat the Indian Fathima Afshan, in a duel in which the Spaniard dominated from start to finish. With this victory, Isabel Calvo becomes world champion of the female strawweight (52.2 kilos) and brings gold to the country. Then it would be the turn of Mercedes Custodio, who unfortunately would be submitted in the first set against the Finnish Sani Brannfors.
Finally, David Hervías had to settle with silver of the middle weight (83.9 kilos) in a fight where despite having constantly tried to finish it, the control of the Tajik Qosim Sardorov ended up weighing more on the judges’ cards. Like Stella, David improves his record from the last World Cup, and now he has to focus on his next fight on November 30 at WAR 4.
Spain closes this tournament held in Uzbekistan with six medalssomething historic. This is a clear indication of how grassroots sport is evolving in the country, and the prosperous years that lie ahead. In the future, all these athletes will be fighting professionally in the main national and international promotions, and will leave Spain as a clear power in the sport.
