In a few months, Isaac Romero (Lebrija, 2000) became the star of Sevilla FC. The few joys that the 2023-24 season brought to the red and white fans were the goals and the chemistry that the Lebrija native showed with Youssef En-Nesyri. His performance earned him a renewal and improvement of his contractual conditions. Now he faces his first full season with the first team and has not yet scored, something that does not bother him inside, since he is convinced that his time will come. Isaac speaks to ABC de Sevilla about his life experience and the controversy he was involved in in the Sevillian derby. – How do you manage being young and, suddenly, having the popularity you have had? – I have my parents and my family there who They tell me to always think about where I come from, and that’s what I do. It’s true that now they recognize you more on the street, they stop you and say good things… not so many bad things. Since I live in my town, very quiet, it is true that I get stopped more. Many children ask me for a photo, those things make me happy because I think about when I was the child who asked the players for photos and signatures. – From the celebration of the derby, your photo with the flag of the Betis shield crossed out went very viral. What do you think of the impact it has had? – It was because of the extra motivation of when you win the game. Personally, I think it wasn’t that big of a deal, much worse things have happened in other games and it hasn’t been given as much importance. They called me from the stands, they gave me the flag, I didn’t know what it was, but once I picked it up… it was done and that’s it. I don’t think we should give much more hype to that either, they are things of the same euphoria at the end of the match. Isaac, in the celebration of the victory against Betis Raúl Doblado – Another image that the derby celebration left was the image of Navas saying goodbye to this type of meetings. He retires in December, right? – I can’t say anything about that. What I’ve been hearing is the same as everyone else. We are happy for Jesus, he deserved the victory, like everything we are doing for him. For what he has left in this club and for what he is doing with the pain he has, he is there giving everything day by day. Everything we achieve goes for him. – When Navas leaves there will be a gap in the squad. A leader of the house is leaving… Is there someone who can fill that gap? – Those of us who come from the youth ranks still need a lot of experience to be able to fill in for Jesus. It’s very difficult, the legacy that Jesus has… none of us youth players can get close to him right now. We haven’t had so many seasons, nor do we have what we’ve experienced in football to fill his gap, I think we have to leave that for him. – Do you think that the youth players have a harder time succeeding in the first team? – There is Jesus… You have to show that you really want to be captain, as the years go by you have to show that you are here for the real club, that you want everything for Sevilla. You have to show that you are a captain on and off the field, if so, in the end you will have your place. It’s a matter of feeling it and showing it. – Some youth teammates have been called up by the under 21 team after this good stretch of results. Would you be excited to count for the senior team? – Yes, of course. I would be very excited, it is the dream of any player to be called by his team. Represent your country and, in this case, the Spanish team is the best team in the world. It would be an honor and I would love it.
