Ubisoft executive producer Mark Rubin has spoken out against a recent report that claims XDefiant – the French company’s free-to-play FPS – is almost dead. Rubin said that while it needs improvement, the game is not close to closing.
Rubin’s remarks were prompted by several reports, including an Insider Gaming article that claimed that XDefiant has little time to turn its situation around and a recent comment from analyst Charles-Louis Planade of Midcap Partners, who said in September that interest in XDefiant has not remained high despite good launch results.
Words from the producer of XDefiant
Rubin said: “I just want to quickly talk about the state of the game, which is: Is the game dying? Nothe game is definitely not dying. We know there are things we need to improve, like Netcode/Hitreg and adding more progression content, but the game is doing well.”
“We just want it to get better. And we do that by addressing the concerns of our community, which has always been our plan. Ubisoft is very supportive of us and has allocated more resources to the team to allow us to do that.”
XDefiant is not currently on Steamso we can’t verify the number of concurrent players, but the numbers from TwitchTracker, which monitors viewership on Twitch, aren’t encouraging: from a peak of over 203,000 concurrent viewers in May 2024, XDefiant currently has less than 1,000 viewers. For comparison, 101,000 people are currently watching Valorant. Of course, low interest on Twitch doesn’t translate into low interest in the game itself.
Additionally, Ubisoft recently started a promotion that gives away game credit just for logging in: this hasn’t helped to dispel the shooter’s alleged problems.
