Continental also does other things than building tires and turbos. They made these in collaboration with Swarovski.
It is the most important part of a car today: the infotainment screen. It is the brain of the car where everything comes together.
Nowadays a car has a lot of functions and you can operate them all via that screen. There used to be plenty of great cars with a bad multi-media system. It didn't matter, because it only concerned the navigation or the radio. With a Shell Street Book and golden vocal chords you could then continue your way.
Continental
But now a clunky operating system makes for a poor overall performance user experience. Look at Lexuses from a few years ago (with that terrible mouse) or the system of the Golf 8. At the IAA in 2023, even the VW employees on the VW stand could confirm that they had received a lot of criticism for it and that adjusting the infotainment system was more important than a new engine, new platform or new bodywork. That turned out well, because those parts were more or less taken from the Golf 7.
Perhaps they can copy Volkswagen from Continental. They have developed a very nice infotainment system. Continental is a supplier and also makes other parts than just tires. For example, the current Golf R has a turbo from Continental. They call it the Crystal Center Display and it was built in collaboration with Swarovski, you know: that jewelry store. Like these cool carts that Kia just launched, this product is unveiled on the CES 2024.
Semi-transparent
The CES is the Consumer Electronics Show. Normally the new smartphones, refrigerator freezers and laptops are unveiled at this fair in Las Vegas, but the automotive industry has also found the fair. In this case it is also understandable, because it concerns an electronic part of a car. It is a 10 inch screen without a frame. Also cool is that it is semi-transparent. This makes it less present, as some screens appear as 'a tablet stuck on the dashboard'.
You can adjust the screen to your liking in terms of brightness and contrast, of course. It is a MicroLED panel, so it has very small pixels that are individually illuminated. When can you get this most beautiful screen for your car? No idea. it is of course still a concept. Given that Continental is a supplier, it seems that car brands can turn to them. It can be very interesting, especially for smaller manufacturers. Better to purchase a good system than to develop a mediocre system yourself, right?
