For over a year now, Electronic Arts has abandoned the license of FIFA and continued to create its own football simulation games under the name “EA Sports FC”. From the beginning, there have been rumblings about who will try to exploit the vacant FIFA license to create a new high-level video game to compete with EA’s work. One name that quickly came to mind was 2K Sports, a Take-Two label.
But is that really the case? Should we expect to see a FIFA 2K25 anytime soon? CEO Strauss Zelnick had his say on the matter.
Words from Take-Two CEO
“Regarding the FIFA license, I would just like to point out that It does not carry any rights; it doesn’t bring players, teams or leagues with it,” Zelnick said. “So it’s not as simple as, say, negotiating with the NFL, NBA or MLB, where at most you have to negotiate with a league and a players’ association. So anyone who wants to compete in the football simulation space … doesn’t have to limit themselves to licensing a particular brand, but there’s a lot more to it.”
Zelnick stressed, however, that developing a successful simulation game can be very rewarding. “We are aware that it is incredibly difficult to build a great console simulation experience, it takes a long time, and if you do it well your users are very loyal and very integrated.”
Meanwhile, Zelnick was quick to remind listeners that Take-Two is already in the football sector thanks to Top Eleven, which he called “the number one mobile soccer management title.” He also called out NBA 2K, WWE 2K and the publisher’s other sports games, calling the various leagues “great partners.”
“From our point of view, we have a great portfolio of sports games… I’m sure we’ll make further announcements in due course.“, Zelnick said.
