The days before a presidential election are especially dangerous. Things can easily get out of control. The occurrence of a violent event or a high-impact, last-minute political event can tilt the voters’ decision in one direction or another. Even more so, when there is true discontent in the population. Political history in many countries is full of episodes where in the end the voters’ decision suddenly changes. The official favorite throughout the campaign loses, and a surprise winner emerges. This Destabilization may occur in Mexico.
Some of these events may be climatic. Hurricanes, rains, floods, droughts can alter citizen participation at the polls. But there are other types of elements, which are caused by political interest groups (public, private or factual; national or international), which can plan events to modify electoral behavior. Criminal accusations, media complaints, robberies and assaults, murder of public figures, social violence, blockades of communication routes, riots, demonstrations and marches, are actions that can be prepared to deliberately alter the elections.
Less than three weeks away, various events are occurring in Mexico that create a kind of perfect storm on the political scene. In the media, information constantly emerges about the influence of organized crime on the electoral process. It is even linked to the president. It is also emphasized that various regions are totally controlled by criminal groups. And public insecurity is becoming widespread throughout the territory.
There are also some books being published about the federal government. Some highlight the successes of the transformation, but others expose the inabilities and deficiencies of the AMLO government. Some in particular are having a strong impact in these elections. They are those recently published by Anabel Hernández and María Amparo Casar. These texts expose the relationships between the government and organized crime, and the national disaster due to the mismanagement of the economy and the government by AMLO and his 4T.
The federal government itself seems to attack itself, when a few days before the elections there are power outages in several entities in the country. And all because of the poor way in which they are managing the public companies that generate, distribute and market electrical energy. It is inconceivable that this would happen to the government before election day. This is political folly that will cost them dearly in electoral terms. Willingly or involuntarily, this federal government is creating its own destabilization. This is an opportunity for the opposition, let’s just hope they know how to take advantage of it.
