Better to play with 4K resolution or with a framerate at 60 fps? For Mark Cerny, the lead system architect of PS4 and PS5, the question is agreed upon by the majority of today’s players, who in his opinion “they much prefer games with higher framerates“.
In a long interview with GamesIndustry, where we talked about how the gaming landscape and the construction of consoles has changed from generation to generation, Cerny talked about how with the ninth generation of consoles, players are showing greater interest in the framerate in video games compared to to the previous ones (where to be honest, the issue didn’t even exist) and how consequently today there are many titles that offer the possibility of reaching 60 fps, which in his opinion is an excellent thing from a gaming point of view.
The words of Mark Cerny
“The other thing that surprised me is the push towards 60 fps. Based on previous console lifecycles, I would have expected there to be a lot more games running at 30 frames per second, just because a game can be a lot more detailed if you have longer rendering time,” Cerny said.” Instead, this time the almost universal rule was to run games at 60 frames.”
“It’s a great thing from a gaming point of view. Gamers largely prefer games with higher frame rates. But I didn’t expect such a departure from previous generations.”
According to numerous rumors that have circulated in recent months, Sony would be about to launch a Pro model of PS5 by the end of the year with more powerful hardware and capable of using a new proprietary upscaling technology similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS and FSR by AMD. If confirmed, this would allow us to have 60 fps graphics modes for a greater number of titles or to reach this target with fewer sacrifices in terms of resolution and graphic details.
