The river taxi project may be the most effective way to get rid of traffic congestion. This is what the Iraqi government has concluded, and has begun to implement it as one of the solutions to relieve traffic jams inside the capital, Baghdad.
A fleet of environmentally friendly boats was provided by the Iraqi Ministry of Transport for the success of the project, the first phase of which was inaugurated.
“The river taxi currently available includes boats that can accommodate 40, 30 and 10 people, and these boats have the highest international safety standards and are environmentally friendly,” says Muhannad Rihan, a river taxi captain.
The river taxi operates from morning until evening with two stations back and forth from the Kadhimiya area to Al-Mutanabbi and vice versa. It is the busiest line during official working hours for employees and university students. At the same time, it is a beautiful tourist way to get to know the old neighborhoods of Baghdad.
An Iraqi citizen commented: “A great project that was supposed to be implemented years ago because it serves many segments of society, especially students and employees, as it is more like a metro and reduces congestion, especially since our streets are crowded.”
According to the latest official statistics of the General Traffic Directorate, there are eight million cars in Baghdad alone, which exceeds the capacity of the capital’s streets to accommodate them.
The river taxi is not only a factor in removing traffic jams, but also a source of tourist attraction at affordable prices.
