Iraq is building a wall on the border with Syria to combat ISIS

Hoda Jassim (Baghdad)

Yesterday, Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari announced the completion of the construction of the “concrete” wall on the Iraqi-Syrian border strip to prevent smuggling operations and combat ISIS.
The Iraqi Border Guard Forces Command held a celebration ceremony for the completion of the concrete wall on the Iraqi-Syrian border strip to enhance border security in the Al-Baghouz area on the border strip between the two countries.
The Minister of Interior praised the efforts of the Border Forces Command as they are the first line of defense for Iraq's borders. According to security sources, the construction of this wall is part of a series of large security fortifications conducted by the Ministry of Interior to enhance border security, which has contributed to controlling the security of the Iraqi-Syrian border, preventing smuggling operations, and combating ISIS terrorist gangs.
In a separate context, yesterday, Iraqi factions bombed with drones a US army base in Khirbet Adnan in Syria.
The operations targeting American military bases in Iraq and Syria come despite Iraq entering into direct negotiations with the United States of America and the international coalition forces to set a timetable for ending its presence and withdrawing from the bases stationed there in “Ain al-Assad” in Anbar Governorate, Erbil International Airport, and the Harir base in the vicinity of Erbil Airport.
