Will Iran attack Israel? After the air raid that destroyed the Iranian consulate in Syria, where seven Revolutionary Guard members including senior general Mohammad Reza Zahedi died, there is a succession of US intelligence alerts for an imminent response of Tehran.
According to American and Israeli military sources, a major missile or drone attack by Iran or its proxies against Israel appears imminent in the next days. The United States is “assisting Israel in planning and sharing intelligence assessments,” the sources said.
The role of proxies
In recent days, however, American intelligence sources quoted by CNN have said they believe Iran is unlikely to attack Israel directly: Tehran would instead be urging the groups it supports to launch retaliatory attacks, so as not to lead to a significant escalation of the situation, worried about possible American or Israeli responses to its attacks. Iran, according to what the 'Times of Israel' reports citing the broadcaster, is urging its 'proxies' to launch large-scale missile and drone attacks against Israel in the coming days.
Khamenei's threat
Yesterday the supreme leader of Iran, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reiterated his promise to retaliate against Tel Aviv: “Israel must be punished and will be punished.” Khamenei added that Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza had ''embittered'' Muslims during Ramadan, accusing Israel of killing over 30,000 innocent people in Gaza. In an apparent response to Khamenei, the Israeli foreign minister Israel Katz he said that “if Iran attacks from its own territory, Israel will respond and attack.”
