Iran said on Saturday it had the right to respond to Israel “at the appropriate time and place” for the death of five members of the powerful Revolutionary Guards in an attack in Syria. The declaration comes at a time of maximum tension in the Middle East.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has the right to respond to the organized terrorism of the false Zionist regime (Israel) at the appropriate time and place,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said in a statement posted on social media. X.
The diplomat guaranteed that the soldiers' deaths “will not be in vain” and called on international organizations and other countries to condemn Israel's “criminal action”.
Kanani highlighted that the “murder” of members of the Revolutionary Guard by Tel Aviv “clearly shows the link between the “terrorist regime (Israel) and the Islamic State in the region”.
The official Syrian news agency “Sana” reported this Saturday an attack by the “Israeli enemy” on a residential building in the Mezzeh neighborhood of Damascus, as a result of Israeli aggression.
Then, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights assured that the alleged Israeli missile aimed at a four-story building, which ended up completely destroyed, caused the death of 10 people — among them, “five Iranians, who are three commanders of the Revolutionary Guard Iranian, and two others unidentified”.
In turn, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed that four of its members died in the attack, for which it blamed Israel.
Later, the Iranian press, such as “PressTV”, increased the number of Iranians killed in the attack to five.
The deaths of the Iranian military come after, on Tuesday morning, Iran bombed supposed Israeli targets on Iraqi soil, where four people died, although Iraq denied that they were Israeli state installations.
Iran justified this attack by the death, in December, of three members of the Revolutionary Guard in Syria, including a general.
Tehran is a key ally of Damascus in the war in Syria, where it has sent soldiers and military advisers, as well as providing economic and political support to the Syrian government.
The Middle East is experiencing a situation of maximum tension due to the war in the Gaza Strip and amid repeated attacks by pro-Iran Iraqi militias against United States positions in that country and in Syria, in addition to the actions of Yemen's Houthi rebels against ships in the Red Sea.
