The streets of Raisi’s hometown, Mashhad, were packed to the brim with people dressed in black and carrying white flowers. The coffin of Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash, was transported through the city to the cemetery on the platform of a large truck, through a sea of mourners.
Before this, Raisi had already been remembered with ceremonies in Tehran and the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran. Raisi had just been on his way to Tabriz when the helicopter carrying him crashed on Sunday in bad weather on the way away from the opening of the dam project.
Iran’s supreme leader ayatollah Ali Khamenei has imposed a five-day period of national mourning in Iran due to the accident.
