Alessia Piperno, the thirty-year-old Italian arrested last Wednesday in Tehran, finds herself locked up in the Evin prison north of the Iranian capital. Informed sources confirm this to Adnkronos. The prison facility is infamous for being used by the Iranian authorities to lock up political prisoners, opponents and prisoners of conscience.
In Evin, for example, the well-known director Jafar Panahi was jailed, who with a hunger strike had denounced the inhuman conditions of detention to which the inmates are subjected. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian citizen who returned to London in March following an agreement between Iran and Great Britain, was also detained for six years in the women’s section of the prison.
There are several organizations for the protection of human rights, including Amnesty International, which have repeatedly turned the spotlight on the violence in this prison.
