They have already caused $2.5 billion in damage to US agriculture. As the researchers note, the animals eat or destroy crops, particularly corn, to gain access to plant roots and insect larvae. At the same time, “super pigs” are carriers of diseases.
The animals are a hybrid of the domestic pig and the Eurasian wild boar. They were introduced to Canada in the 1980s. In 2001, many of them were released.
Previously, the head of the University of Saskatchewan research project, Ryan Brooke, called “super pigs” the most terrible large mammal on the planet in terms of settling new territories. They are able to change their habits and adapt to new conditions.
