Internet access was disrupted in East Africa yesterday (Sunday) due to damage to underwater cables, according to what was announced by NetBlocks, an organization responsible for monitoring Internet networks.
The organization stated that Tanzania and the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean were the most affected, while Mozambique, Malawi, Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda, Uganda, Comoros and Madagascar were affected to varying degrees, in addition to Sierra Leone in West Africa.
The organization explained that the reason was due to malfunctions affecting the marine cable systems “SEACOM and EASSy” that connect the region.
According to the Tanzanian Minister of Information and Technology, the malfunctions occurred in cables linking Mozambique to South Africa.
