He International Day of Play It emerged in 1999, at the initiative of the International Association of Playgrounds, with the main purpose of making visible the right to play for children.
What is the game?
Play is a fundamental activity for the development and learning of children, it allows them to enhance their imagination, explore the environment in which they operate, express their particular vision of the world, manifestation of their creativity, development of socio-emotional and psychomotor skills through of the relationship with others.
Among its main contributions we can find the following areas:
- Psychomotor development, which is carried out by strengthening physical aspects such as coordination, balance, laterality, time and space location, anticipation and bodily reaction, aspects that will generally favor subsequent processes in learning.
- Body perception, having knowledge of your body and its relationship with the environment, allowing you to explore the world around you through the use of all the senses, appropriating experiences through experimentation that is carried out using all the senses, as well as the relationship cause-effect of their actions and interactions.
- Strengthening of imagination and creativity, since the game allows the acquisition of basic skills through the body and then internalize them, making neural connections that can later be used in the learning process, acquisition of reading and writing or solving mathematical problems, thinking criticism and decision making.
- It promotes the strengthening of self-esteem by carrying out various activities from an informal environment, where you have the opportunity to make mistakes and try again without judgment or blame, participating from the freedom and motivation that the game itself represents.
- It allows you to perform various functions and social roles that allow you to prepare for adult life, acquiring skills for later stages, experiencing decision-making, establishing rules, limits and important aspects for your personality.
- Generate the development of social skills through interaction with others, including collaborative work, respect for shifts, tolerance for frustration and decision making.
- Contribute to emotional stability, since through play children can express both positive and negative emotions in a more functional way, finding various possibilities to manage their emotions without violating the integrity of others.
“If each child had the opportunity to build their own world from the door that the game opens, they would have more opportunities as adults to enjoy, love, smile and live life to the fullest.”
