An American designer is the first ‘digital nomad’ to come to live in Ollolai, a town of 1,200 inhabitants in the heart of Sardinia, a beautiful Italian region, which became famous by offering houses for one euro and has now launched the project ‘ Work from Ollolai/Traballa dae Ollola’ to fight against depopulation.
The initiative, launched by the local municipality in collaboration with the Sa Mata cultural association, seeks to develop a network of international residences for professionals who will live and work in Sardinia thanks to ‘smartworking’.

According to information collected by ‘El Clarín’, Clarese Partis, 39, a designer for the User Experience agency, is a native of California and responded to the call along with 1,112 other candidates, completing the application on the portal dedicated to that purpose.
The project of the municipal administration encourages arrivals by offering a house at the price of 1 euro per month, following an idea that the municipality launched a few years ago: with 1 euro in Ollolai you can buy an uninhabited house, as long as it is restructured and inhabited, thus increasing the population and economic effects.

Partis, who has been working remotely as a digital nomad for two years, told the ANSA agency: “My goal is to do my work wherever I am using the web and new technologies. When the opportunity arose to leave for Ollolai, I was very excited to come to enjoy a new nature, mountains and fresh air.“.
Similarly, the woman stated that: “I have only been here for a few days and I will stay for a month, but I have to say that living here is better than I expected and the welcome has been very warm. There is a lot to explore in Sardinia and I am happy to immerse myself in the interior of the island and its culture”.
The project was born from an idea of the mayor Francesco Columbu, who initially developed a network with the United States but later extended the tender to the whole world.

Last May, the launch of the proposal rebounded in the international media, bringing to the municipal offices the incredible number of more than a thousand requests from ‘digital nomads’.
“We will receive with open arms all those who want to come. naturally thanks to the accommodation we have at our disposal, and today we do the same with Clarese (…) Her presence will revitalize a country that offers nature, tranquility, healthy food, traditions and a welcoming community. I also want to remind you that we are one of the five ‘blue zones’ in the world,” recalled the mayor.
The “blue zones” are five regions of the world that share a common lifestyle and environment, and whose exceptional longevity has been precisely verified. One of those five areas in Sardinia.

“They wrote to us from Peru, Mexico, South Africa, India, but also from many European countries. Naturally we cannot satisfy everyone, but the truth is that we will try to understand the potential of this sector,” the woman said.
Meanwhile, foreigners continue to buy houses for 1 euro in Ollolai: “The last one was bought by a South African ambassador,” confirmed Matta.
