Nearly ten percent of consumer fireworks are unsafe. This is apparent from tests by the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT). The importers have been ordered to immediately remove these fireworks from the market and destroy them.
This concerns the so-called category 2 fireworks (F2), such as compounds, flares, bang fireworks, fountains, cakes and batteries. These are fireworks that pose little danger and make relatively little noise.
The inspection tested 187 different products. Nine percent were rejected because it did not meet the safety requirements. In addition, the quality of 31 percent of the fireworks is ‘unsatisfactory’. These importers have received a warning letter. They have to adjust the products.
The tests had already been carried out shortly before the cabinet decided on a complete ban on fireworks during the New Year. “Despite the fireworks ban, it is important that these consumer fireworks are tested, because they can be put on the market and set off next year,” says Reinder Auwema, chair of the fireworks department at the ILT.
Lower
“The percentage of rejected fireworks that had to be immediately removed from the market is significantly lower than in previous years. We hope that this indicates an improvement in the quality of consumer fireworks, but this will have to be confirmed by follow-up research in the coming years.”
The trade association has indicated that it will remove the most risky products from the market itself. Auwema: “We will remove fireworks that do not comply with the rules from the market and we will continue to oblige importers to remove these fireworks and have them destroyed.”
In December, the inspectorate already held a test day for F1 fireworks that were allowed during the turn of the year. This showed that many fountains (34 percent), crackling pellets (23 percent) and ground spinning tops (13 percent) did not meet the safety requirements.
Despite the fireworks ban and the lockdown, the damage around the turn of the year was not lower than in other years:
