Information security | Australia also bans the use of Tiktok on government devices

The decision was made on the advice of the country’s intelligence services.

Australia plans to ban the use of the Chinese-owned Tiktok video application on the devices of the country’s administration. The decision has been made on the advice of the country’s intelligence services and the ban will enter into force as soon as possible, said the Minister of Justice Mark Dreyfus on Tuesday.

Tiktok is a worldwide popular app for sharing short videos. In the past, the use of Tiktok in their public administrations has been limited by at least the European Union, the United States, Canada, Great Britain and New Zealand, citing security reasons. From the Nordic countries, Norway and Sweden have made similar decisions.

Authorities have been concerned that Chinese authorities could use Tiktok’s user data. The application is owned by the Chinese technology company Bytedance. There is no certain information about how much information about users ends up at the company and what is done with it.
