The increase in the incidence of influenza in young children “even at the end of April is not unusual: Influenza B is circulating during this period (Haemophilus influenzae type B) and this increases the effects of an epidemiological backlash, then the peak of cold in these weeks helps colds like the flu because the viruses penetrate the mucous membranes better. I imagine that the arrival of milder temperatures in line with the season will gradually cause the flu to die down”. This is how Massimo Andreoni, scientific director of the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (Simit), speaks on the latest bulletin at Adnkronos Salute. of the RespiVirNet surveillance system, managed by the Higher Institute of Health.
The data
According to the latest bulletins, Italians put to bed by flu and 'cousin' viruses exceed 14 million, infections that still don't seem to want to let go, thanks to the 'up and down' of the weather this strange spring. Indeed, among younger children the incidence is rising again.
“In the sixteenth week of 2024”, from 15 to 21 April, we read, “the estimated cases of flu-like syndrome, compared to the entire Italian population, are approximately 282,000, for a total of approximately 14,399,000 cases since the beginning of surveillance”. In the 7 days analyzed the incidence of flu-like syndromes remained “stable”, equal to 4.8 cases per thousand attended (they were 4.7 in the previous week). “Children under 5 years of age remain most affected, where an incidence level of 14 cases per thousand assisted is observed, a slight increase compared to the previous week (13.7)”. In Tuscany, Puglia and Basilicata, the incidence of influenza & Co. returns to the baseline threshold.
