Inflation in the Netherlands jumps to 12% in August due to the jump in energy prices

The Dutch Central Statistical Office (CBS) noted that “energy is currently a major contributor to global inflation”.

“Energy was 151 percent more expensive in August compared to the same month the previous year. It was 108 percent in July,” he added.

Inflation continues to rise in the Netherlands for more than a year, after it exceeded 2 percent in August last year, for the first time in a long time.

The Central Bureau of Statistics explained that the 12 percent increase in August is a record, “since we started recording monthly numbers in 1963.”

“The last time the annual figure exceeded 12 percent was in 1945,” the office said in an email to AFP.

Consumer prices in the Netherlands rose 10.3 percent year on year in July.

The office indicated that the prices of clothing and foodstuffs (increased by 13.1 percent), especially pasta, also had an upward impact on the general inflation last month.

On the other hand, the annual rise in fuel prices at stations was lower in August than in July. Auto fuel prices were 16.7 percent higher in August compared to the same month a year earlier, while they rose by 24.6 percent in July year-on-year.

According to the European Union Harmonized Consumer Price Index (HICP), consumer prices in the Netherlands rose by 13.7 percent in August year on year. And “Eurostat” announced last week that inflation in the euro area broke a new record in August, reaching 9.1 percent on an annual basis.
