The General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE) has received the monthly progress report of the Vote of Mexican Women and Mexicans Living Abroad (VMRE) corresponding to the month of April of the current year.
This report details a significant fact in the electoral participation of compatriots from abroad.
Councilor Arturo Castillo Loza, president of the Temporary Commission of the VMRE, highlighted that the Nominal List of the Abroad Electorate has been made up of 223,961 records.
Of these, 151,989 correspond to electronic voting over the Internet, 56,249 to postal voting and 15,723 to in-person voting. To date, 85,304 electronic votes and 37,376 postal vote envelopes have been received.
Record Participation in Postal Vote
“The postal vote from abroad has reached the historical average of participation for presidential elections,” stressed Castillo Loza. This achievement marks significant progress in the inclusion and participation of Mexicans residing abroad in the democratic processes of their country of origin.
The INE emphatically called on citizens registered to vote from abroad to exercise their right to vote within the established deadlines.
Castillo Loza reminded those registered to vote electronically that the platform will be available until June 2 at 6:00 p.m. (Central Mexico Time).
He also urged those who opted for postal voting to send their envelopes as soon as possible to ensure that their votes are counted.
Facilities and Resources for Voters Abroad
To facilitate the process, the INE has provided the voteextranjero.mx platform, where voters can find all the information necessary to exercise their right.
This initiative is part of the INE’s ongoing efforts to ensure that all Mexicans, regardless of their place of residence, have the opportunity to participate in electoral processes.
The participation of Mexicans abroad is crucial, not only because of their growing number but also because of their impact on shaping the country’s political landscape. With more than 11 million Mexicans living outside of Mexico, mainly in the United States, voting from abroad represents a significant force in national elections.
Historic context
Compared to previous elections, current turnout represents a notable increase. In the 2018 presidential elections, a total of 98,854 votes were received from abroad, including all modalities.
The increase in participation in 2024 reflects the INE’s efforts to improve access and facilitate the voting process for Mexicans abroad.
