Dmitry Svetlow revealed the sales of the narrative adventure Indikawhich are below expectations and far from the 100,000 mark across all platforms. Only 55,000 copies were sold on Steam. Svetlow, who is the founder of the software house Odd Meter, as well as the director of the game, touched on the topic in an interview with the Russian newspaper Cyber, published on June 10, in which he explained what he believes are the two reasons of failure: the increasingly difficult video game market, with more and more launches and with the sales queue getting shorter; YouTube, that is, many players prefer to watch narrative games on video rather than play them and then pretend to have played them.
Svetlow did not reveal sales on other platforms, calling them good anyway and expressing hope that 100,000 copies will be reached by the end of the month.
Svetlow’s statements do not conflict with those of the publisher 11 bit studios, who had spoken of sales according to his expectations and of an investment that paid off. Evidently the developer and publisher had different goals.
Svetlow himself explained that Indika can be considered a success for 11 bitwhen compared to other titles published by the label with higher development costs: “The publisher expects the game to recoup its costs within a year and start generating profits.”
Indika was launched on May 2nd and has made a lot of headlines for its content. The game currently has a Very Positive average rating on Steam, with 89% of the more than 2,500 reviews received being positive. If you want more details, read our review.
