Candelaria Cruz Aguirre, Rarámuri candidate to the Municipal Presidency of Guachochi by the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), He expressed himself in his native Rarámuri language during the official debate between candidates for said position on May 13, without that the State Electoral Institute (IEE) of Chihuahua provided A translator so that he could communicate with the other candidates, the moderators and make his proposals known to the audience.
The situation silenced the first candidate from an indigenous people for Mayor of the townand Only Woman who aspires to office, making it impossible for the rest of the citizens to find out about his proposals and ideas.
It also affected the entire population that could not understand to the other candidates, the topics and questions of the debate if they do not speak Spanish. The Electoral Institute itself, which had taken affirmative actions to guarantee that political parties in the State nominated indigenous candidates, did not provide tools for the participation of this sector of the population to be effective.
During his initial intervention, Cruz Aguirre spoke Spanish but with obvious nervousness. He even had twenty seconds of time left over.
“I am here for my people (…) Because they don’t listen to us from above and I know what it is like,” said the woman at the beginning of the meeting.
The moderators did not speak the Rarámuri language, so their questions and attempts at dialogue with Aguirre were always in Spanish. Nor were the sign language interpreters able to convey what the applicant said.
Until now, andl IEE Chihuahua has not provided subtitles for the recording of the debate that could allow all citizens to know the proposals that the candidate said, despite the fact that the moderation of the debate assured the candidate that this measure would be taken.
Ironicallyone of the themes of the meeting was attention to indigenous communities of the state but due to the omissions of the authorities, the only indigenous candidate could not be understood by the other candidates or by the audience and users who followed the debate, as she did not speak their language.
