At least 31 people have been killed and 19 injured in a bus accident in northern India, the country’s authorities announced on Wednesday. The news agency AFP and the British Broadcasting Corporation report on the matter, among others BBC.
The accident occurred in the mountainous region of Uttarakhand when a bus carrying wedding guests skidded off the road into a ravine on Tuesday evening local time. According to AFP, the bus had fallen at least 500 meters.
According to the BBC, the cause of the accident is still unknown.
The World Bank according to a report published last year, 11 percent of the world’s fatal road traffic accidents take place in India, says AFP. India covers one percent of the world’s vehicles, so accidents are clearly more common than the number of vehicles suggests.
According to the same report, 150,000 people die in car accidents in India every year. The number corresponds to one person every four minutes.
According to the BBC, the reason behind the accidents is not only poor driving skills, but also the poor condition of the roads.
Car accidents are especially common in Uttarakhand, where part of the Himalayan mountain range is located. There are several pilgrimage sites in the area.
Most recently, a similar accident occurred in June, where twenty people died after a bus plunged into a ditch. The bus was on its way to the local temple.
