Project seeks to generate energy to supply a lunar base; China should join the venture
India and China may partner with Russia to install a nuclear power plant on the Moon. The project, led by Rosatom (the Russian state-owned nuclear energy company), seeks to generate energy to power a lunar base. The information is from the newspaper Times of India.
The issue was highlighted by Rosatom chief Alexey Likhachev at the Eastern Economic Forum held last week. At the event, he cited “the involvement of the international community” in the project and said that the “Chinese and Indian partners are very interested”.
In May, Roscosmos said work on establishing a nuclear power plant on the Moon was underway. The aim is for the project to be completed by 2035.
Russia and China announced in 2021 plans to build a joint lunar base, the ILRS (International Lunar Research Station).
Yuri Borisov, head of Roscosmos (the Russian space agency), said in March this year that the structure will allow the construction of lunar settlements.
According to him, solar panels would not be able to provide enough electricity to supply these settlements. Therefore, nuclear energy would be one of the possible solutions.
