Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated the first indigenously built aircraft carrier.
“Today, we have caught up with the few countries that are able to build aircraft carriers of this size at home,” Modi said in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
The aircraft carrier “Vikrant” is 262 meters long and has been put into service in the Navy.
“Vikrant is giving the country new confidence,” the prime minister said.
The new ship accommodates a crew of 1,600 people.
India is currently building about 39 ships and submarines in the country’s shipyards.
India is a member of the Quad, along with the United States, Australia and Japan, which are seeking increasing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
