Polling stations in India closed yesterday, 6 weeks after the start of the voting process for the general elections.
About one billion people have the right to cast their votes in the most populous country in the world, and the elections were held in seven stages over a period of 6 weeks, with the aim of reducing as much as possible the organizational burden of a voting process of this size over a vast geographical area.
Television polls of voters’ opinions as they left the polls yesterday showed that the alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to win a large majority in the general elections. Most opinion polls expected the ruling National Democratic Alliance to win a two-thirds majority in the 543-member House of Representatives. Gaining 272 seats qualifies to win a simple majority, while a two-thirds majority allows the government to introduce broad amendments to the constitution.
