The rehearsal of the São Paulo Military Police camera and the indistinct voices of the audience trying to get comfortable in the Noble Hall of the USP Law School, in Largo do São Francisco, drowned out the students’ slogans. But, in the background, not without some effort, it was possible to hear the protest against governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), at the auditorium door.
The authorities who filled the hall to attend the inauguration of the new Attorney General of Justice, Paulo Sérgio de Oliveira e Costa, did not seem to mind. The conversations continued along the way. Few interrupted the chat – briefly – to try to identify what was happening outside. Some found it funny. Others recommended that students “go study.”
In the brief interstices of the solemn session, like the pauses in the national anthem, screams emerged. At times, the master of ceremonies and the guests who paid their respects had to force their voices into the microphone to make themselves heard. Other than that, the event continued normally.
In the hallway, students shouted: “Tarcísio, I’m not mistaken, you’re a militia member.” The governor was also called the “child of the dictatorship”.
The demands were countless. Free student pass, reversal of the privatization of the Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp) and expansion of body cameras in the Military Police.
One of the posters said: “Students are not a police case”. This week, students were detained by the Military Police at the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo in protest against the creation of civic-military schools, Tarcísio’s project.
The governor, however, did not clash with the protesters. He arrived at the event through another entrance, reserved for the authorities who would be part of the formal session table.
