Mexico City.- The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) trust that the mexicans “will overcome fear and intimidation” in the sunday electionsthe bigger and the more violent in the history of the country.
“We trust that the participation and mobilization of citizens will overcome fear and intimidation. The vote of Mexicans matters. Therefore, go vote with enthusiasm and democratic conviction,” the head of the mission, Heraldo Muñoz, former chancellor of Chile.
He message occurs in the eve of the largest election in the history of Mexicowhere more than 98 million people are called to renew more than 20,000 positionsas the presidencythe 500 deputiesthe 128 senators and nine state governments.
But they are also considered the most violentsince the Government recognized last Tuesday the murder of 22 candidatesalthough independent organizations register moreas 31 reported by Data Cívica and 34 by the consulting firm Integraliawhat comes up the figure to around 250 when including advisors, officials and family members.
“Your vote will be a strong message for those who resort to violence,” said Muñoz.
Just this week, the OAS Mission condemned the murder on Friday of Jorge Huerta, candidate of the ruling Green Party for councilor in the municipality of Izúcar de Matamoros, in the central state of Puebla, and on Wednesday it regretted that of Alfredo Cabrera, candidate for mayor of Coyuca de Benítez, in southern Guerrero.
“It is essential that all political forces in the country demonstrate their civic commitment to Mexico by promoting tolerance and respect,” said the head of the mission.
The former chancellor recalled that this is the seventh time that the OAS accompanies the elections in Mexico, where there will be observers in the 32 entities, as well as in Los Angeles, Dallas and Washington in the United States, Montreal (Canada) and Madrid (Spain) to give “monitoring of the day from its beginning until the transmission of the results.”
“I call on all actors, Mexicans, to wait patiently and in peace for the preliminary results of the INE (National Electoral Institute), the only authority empowered to do so. Through their participation in the polls, Mexican democracy will come out stronger,” Muñoz concluded.
